Difficulties Finding a Qualified Candidate to Replace an Expat on Assignment? Try This!

On average, over 30% of expatriate assignments are unaccompanied, meaning that the employee doesn’t bring a family. Some businesses hope that not bringing a family will help the employee focus on work and be more successful. Nonetheless, a large percentage of unaccompanied employees still repatriate before their contracts end, leaving projects incomplete and behind deadlines.

So, then you have to replace the employee with another one and pile on numerous costs, including those associated with project delays. In some cases, this costs you $1 Million or more, with each day that passes.

A number of surveys and research gives us varying results on just how difficult a factor to replace an expat employee. Nearly three quarters of companies report that they often have difficulties finding candidates with sufficient skills, qualifications and experience for overseas assignments.

So, what can your company do to overcome this challenge?

My suggestion is to prevent your qualified and experienced employees from ending their posting early. Please don’t lose your time, energy and money to find a new candidate when you have already one in place where he is needed. You can provide support to the current employee, to encourage him not to leave his expat assessment.

How?

By offering a special support to your employee. A number of surveys indicate that expats employees decide to comeback home because of spouse, children or family struggles, and those can’t be escaped simply by not moving the family with the employee.

So, a company faces difficulties finding candidates with sufficient skills, qualifications, and experience because employees have personal, family challenges. These types of challenges can be mitigated by the company, and one way to do that is to provide coaching programs to both spouses, whether they both go to the job posting or not.

This approach can prevent leaving and above all guarantee to retain your qualified and experimented employee in your company. When the couple has the tools they need to manage a relationship across time zones and with so much time apart, they will work as a better team to help the employee finish your overseas contract.
